A New Twist on Hot Dogs

A super fun and easy way to elevate plain old hot dogs with a classic sandwich fav- the blt. Wrapped in crispy bacon, then brushed with some sweet bbq sauce, these hot dogs get nice and crispy and develop a little bit of a caramelization from the sweetness of the bbq sauce and paired of course with some lettuce and tomato. We took it to another level by adding some of our homemade creamy ranch sauce drizzled on top.

I think just about any sandwich combination can be transformed into a delicious hot dog. By using the hot dog and the bun as the base and adding the fixings from the sandwich you’ve got something that’s even more delicious. It’s a great little canvas to work with.

Now I grilled these hot dogs on my Traeger smoker because I recently upgraded my grill to a smoker, and wow does it ever make food taste good. A simply hot dog taste so friggen good I can’t believe it.  But you can grill these on any bbq I think the secret to the perfect doneness is to judge the bacon and get it to a good crispiness while also brushing it in some bbq sauce once or twice throughout the cook time. Otherwise, there isn’t anything hard about this recipe at all. You’re just cooking a hot dog.

I have to say, lately i’ve been obsessed with making my own ranch sauce. It’s just so much better than the store bought version. I think it’s the celery seed that makes all the difference. You can’t forget it in your sauce. To make the ranch I mix some sour cream with mayonnaise and stir in a touch of buttermilk. For the seasoning and herbs mix it with some onion powder, garlic powder, fresh dill, parsley, chives and celery seed.

Ingredients:

  • beef hot dogs
  • thick cut bacon
  • hot dog buns

Toppings:

  • lettuce head finely chopped
  • tomato finely diced
  • BBQ sauce
  • ranch sauce

Instructions:

Preheat grill to 350 degrees F

Wrap each hot dog in bacon and secure both ends with a toothpick. Brush each hot dog with some BBQ sauce and cook for about 20 minutes or until the bacon is fully cooked through.

To serve: Warm the hot dog buns slightly on the grill or in the microwave for a few seconds to make it easier to handle and not tear. Fill the bottom of the bun with the chopped lettuce, insert the bacon wrapped hot dog in the center and brush with more BBQ sauce. Finish by dressing with diced tomatoes and drizzling with ranch sauce.
